Peace

Peace

Peace is a box turtle,
Its brightly spotted limbs
Completely withdrawn within its dull shell.
In spite of severe cold,
Of being buried under several feet of earth,
In spite of the teeth of coons and hounds,
Of children knocking and calling,
In spite of being driven over by cars
Or trampled upon by deer,
The turtle is snugly and safely
Sound asleep in the quiet protection
Of its sturdy shell.
