Setting up the stage

Setting up the stage for Play 1

CHARACTERS:

Orangutans 1-5
Zookeeper
Veterinarian
Plumber

STAGE SETUP:

Scenes in orang utans' cage are from the orang utans' point of view: they occur inside a big cage. The cage has straw on the floor and a few small trees in it, and one wall is made of metal bars with a gate which has a simple latch which is usually locked from outside with a big padlock.

Scenes occuring in the primate house are from the people's point of view: they occur outside the cages. The primate house is a hall with rows of cages on either side.

Most of the action either occurs here, or inside the orangutans' cage, or is heard offstage. When things happen in the orangutans' cage in these scenes, either it is only heard, or the orangutans are near the front of their cage where they can be seen from outside.
